Maki is a New York City based Photographer. He shoots fun portraits of youthful people in graphic looking environments. He differentiates "youthful" from "young age" and therefore his subjects aren't confined to a certain age range nor the youngness of their physical skin. Rather, he defines youthful as someone who is full of life and energy. Yes, that does sound a little bit Zen-like. After all, there are many twenty-something year olds out there who actually think they are old, like grandma and grandpa. He is fascinated by Japanese Manga comics, especially the wide eyed expressions of the characters that engage the viewer, and the ink marks that convey movement in the scene of an otherwise static page. These are qualities he incorporates into his photography. As they say in Japanese, this is "Manga-chikku". Loose, smiling, and "not-so-serious-looking-like-one-of-those-scary-fashion-models" are all important components of his work.
He grew up in London and moved to New York when he was 18 years old to attend New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He is bilingual English and Japanese. After graduating with a BFA in Photography & Imaging, Maki began his career working as a photo assistant, eventually making the switch to shooting full time. He is an award recipient of The Canon Creative Photography Competition.
During his free time away from the camera, Maki enjoys being a hang-loose-super-nerd with his friends who are also into things like action super heros, and other goofy comedic things along similar lines. He is often found going to the movies, and being a food junkie. He likes to be with people who like to laugh out loud all the time, and I mean the uncontrollable genuine burst outs, and he is also a huge-huge fan of awesome head banging Rock N' Roll music. |
